2nd Grade Art Masters: Lesson 1

The first Art Masters lesson for 2nd Grade features the following:

Artist: Albrecht Durer
Concept: Positive/Negative Space
Activity: Insect Drawing/Leaf Stenciling

Tips/Advice For this Project: This project can be a messy one! The students love it. Two docents can handle it, but it would be great to have more. It's tough for the students to not want to drench their paper, working with them and having them spray a holding the bottle away from the paper helps a lot. Sponges can be used to blot areas where paint was sprayed on a little thick. We do have silk leaves in the Art Masters room, but gathering leaves from your yard, as the lesson suggests, is a time saver since you can use them once and toss them. Count on 3 to 4 leaves per student. Also, if you are short on help it might be best to plan on letting this project dry overnight and then adding the backing and the student's insects the next day... so you might want to plan ahead with your teacher for this if you have a very strict one hour window.
